Activities include singing, chants and rhymes, listening games, patterns to echo, and movement games, all of which nurture the child's musical development while satisfying the child's need to learn in a holistic environment. Children will play various instruments including increasing use of resonator bars and will begin to learn the musical languages of solfege (do, re, mi) and Gordon rhythm language.
Parents stay for the class, although some of the activities are designed to have the children participate independently of their parents. Occasionally, children participate without a parent -- contact the teacher before registering if you need this option.

This Pre-Piano 2 class is designed for 5 through 7 year olds (children in Pre-K with music experience, Kindergarteners and 1st graders not yet ready for piano lessons.) In this 45 minute per week class, children explore the music, dances, composers and stories of the British Isles (Enland, Wales, Ireland, Scotland). As always, the key ingredients are singing, listening, playing instruments, movement, and tonal and rhythm patterns. Through echoing patterns, the children will build a vocabulary of musical phrases which they can recognize aurally and visually, leading to an understanding of musical notation. Keyboard will be introduced. (Classes in this series include African-American Heritage, British Isles, Native American and Germany on a Rotation.)
Parents are encouraged to join for the last 10 minutes of class on certain days - you will be informed in advance. Parents are welcome to attend the entire class if they wish.

The final step on the pathway to music literacy, this program is designed to teach children to play the songs they've been hearing, singing, and dancing to throughout the years of early-childhood. An extension of the work done in Music Makers: Around the World, this class follows a very sequential approach to building piano skills and understanding musical notation as set forth in the books, Music Makers: At the Keyboard. Emphasis begins with playing by ear and will gradually introduce note reading. We will continue to sing, dance and play other instruments (drums, Orff instruments such as xylophones, glockenspiels.)
Group piano lessons are FUN, engaging and encourage playing in front of others. Children want to continue! Five years of group piano lessons are available. Child must have a piano or keyboard with at least 61 keys to participate. Recommended for 1st - 3rd grades. KINDERGARTENERS ONLY ACCEPTED IF CONFIRMED AFTER SUMMER PIANO CAMP.
A Parent Orientation meeting with teacher is required before acceptance into Beginning Piano Class. This will be scheduled at your convenience as soon as possible.
THIS IS A SCHOOL-YEARLONG CLASS.
Mondays, 4:30 - 5:30 pm Begins 8/25 - last class Fall 12/15; Spring Semester 1/15 - 4/13
FULL - ASK FOR WAITING LIST
Wednesdays, 4:30 - 5:30 pm Begins 9/3 - last class Fall 12/10; Spring Semester 1/7 - 4/1
Thursdays, 6:30 - 7:30 pm Begins 9/4 - last class Fall 12/11; Spring Semester 1/8 - 4/2
Make-ups, if needed, will be added to the end of the semester. No class during Warsaw Schools' Fall (10/13-17), Thanksgiving (11/25-28) or Spring Break (4/6-10).
CLASS IS BILLED FOR THE YEAR; however, you may pay as you like as long as the semester's bill is paid in FULL by the next to last class. I accept cash, checks, credit cards in the studio, VENMO and PayPal. MusicLink Scholarships are also available -- see section of my website for further information. IF YOU DIVIDE OUT THE SCHOOL-YEAR TOTAL, IT COMES OUT TO APPROXIMATELY $22 PER WEEK FOR 1 HOUR CLASS TIME -- CHEAPER THAN PROBABLY ANYONE IN TOWN.
WHY DO I REQUIRE A SCHOOL-YEAR COMMITMENT?
1) Because I teach in Groups, I cannot add students to Groups if someone drops out; whereas Private Teachers can add a new student whenever they want. So, to remain in business, I need the longer commitment.
2) Groups become friends and partners in learning and children dropping out mid-year hinders the learning process.
3) Groups need to stay the correct size -- too large isn't good; but too small is probably even worse! A Group Class of 2 or 3 really doesn't function like a Group any more.
4) We play ensembles which require all the students participating together -- like a "band" or a "sports team", each individual has an important part to play.
5) It is good for children to learn to make and stick to commitments. Piano is a commitment in my Studio.
Tuition: | $221.00 per semester |
Registration Fee: | $60.00 Fall + $60.00 Winter/Spring |
Total: | $562.00 (year) |
During the second year of Group Keyboard lessons, children will continue to play by ear while transitioning to playing "off the page." Improvisation, chords and playing in many keys are features of this year.

In this recreational music making class in Winona Lake, you will be playing the piano right away. We will take a non-pressured, non-stressful approach to ensure a comfortable learning environment for all.
Previous music experience and perceived talent are not required. Hours of dedicated time and practice are not required. You only need a love of music and the desire to make music! (A keyboard-preferably at least 61 keys or piano on which to practice is a necessity if you truly desire to make music outside of class, however!)
We will be learning how to read Lead Sheets of Christmas songs using solfege & note names, patterns, and how to read the chord symbols.
